RRB Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) Selection Process:

The recruitment process shall comprise the following stages:

(i) First Stage CBT (CBT-1)

(ii) Second Stage CBT (CBT-2)

(iii) Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

(iv) Document Verification (DV) and

(v) Medical Examination (ME)

Exam schedule and location details will be provided in due course by email, SMS, and official RRB websites.

Phase I of CBT (CBT-1):

(a) CBT-1 will solely serve as a screening test to determine which qualified applicants, based on their merit and normal marks, would be shortlisted for CBT-2.

(a) When generating the final panel, the CBT-1 marks will not be considered in final stage.

(c) For all upcoming phases of this recruitment process, applicants who meet the modified age requirements for OBC, SC, or ST and are selected for CBT-2 will only be considered as members of their respective reserved groups.

(d) CBT-1’s Structure and Syllabus:

(i) Runtime: Fifty minutes

(ii) There are 75 questions, and the maximum score is 75 (one mark for each question).

(iii) For every incorrect answer, there will be a 1/third mark deduction in marking.

(iv) Marks for CBTs conducted across many shifts shall be normalized.

(v) The minimum pass rate to be eligible is 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC (NCL), 30% for SC, and 25% for ST.

(vi) In general, the CBT-1 question format will adhere to the minimum technical requirements and/or educational criteria specified for the position. The following curriculum will likely be covered in the objective-style questions with multiple choice answers:

(A) Mathematics: Number system, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work; Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cistern etc.

(B) Mental Ability: Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and Decision Making, Similarities and Differences, Analytical reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement – Arguments and Assumptions etc.

(C) General Science: The syllabus under this shall cover Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of 10th standard level.

(D) General Awareness: Current affairs, science & technology, sports, culture, personalities, economics, politics and other subject of importance.

Stage II CBT (CBT-2):

(a) Based on their normal marks and merit in CBT-1, applicants will be ranked according to their RRB and community upon completion of CBT-2.

(b) The maximum number of applicants to be shortlisted for CBT-2 is 15 (fifteen) times the total number of positions announced for each RRB.

(c) Railways, however, retain the right to raise or lower the aforementioned cap as necessary to guarantee that there are enough applicants for the posted position.

(d) The applicants’ scores and merit in CBT-2 and CBAT shall be the sole factors used to create the final panels for ALP.

CBT-2 Pattern and Syllabus:

(i) CBT-2 will consist of the two sections listed below, Part-A and Part-B.

(ii) Two hours and thirty minutes in all, with 175 questions asked

➢ 90 minutes and 100 questions in Part-A

➢ Part-B: Forty-five questions and an hour

(iii) For every wrong answer, there will be a 1/third mark deduction in marking.

(iv) Marks for CBTs conducted across many shifts shall be normalized.

(v) The eligibility requirements for Part A are as follows: 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC (NCL), 30% for SC, and 25% for ST.

(vi) If a candidate, regardless of community, is able to receive qualifying marks (35%) in Part-B, only the marks earned in Part-A will be taken into consideration for the shortlisting of applicants for further phases of this recruiting process.

SYLLABUS for Part-A:

(A) Mathematics: Number system, BODMAS, Decimals, Fractions, LCM, HCF, Ratio and Proportion, Percentages, Mensuration, Time and Work; Time and Distance, Simple and Compound Interest, Profit and Loss, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry, Elementary Statistics, Square Root, Age Calculations, Calendar & Clock, Pipes & Cistern etc.

(B) General Intelligence and Reasoning: Analogies, Alphabetical and Number Series, Coding and Decoding, Mathematical operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Jumbling, Venn Diagram, Data Interpretation and Sufficiency, Conclusions and decision making, Similarities and differences, Analytical reasoning, Classification, Directions, Statement—Arguments and Assumptions etc.

(C) Basic Science and Engineering: The broad topics that are covered under this shall be Engineering Drawing (Projections, Views, Drawing Instruments, Lines, Geometric figures, Symbolic Representation), Units, Measurements, Mass Weight and Density, Work Power and Energy, Speed and Velocity, Heat and Temperature, Basic Electricity, Levers and Simple Machines, Occupational Safety and Health, Environment Education, IT Literacy etc.  

Syllabus for Part-B:

(A) Part-B consists solely of a qualifying exam, with questions drawn from the several trade syllabi as specified by the Directorate General of Training (DGT).

(B) Notably, the qualifying percentage is 35% for all candidates, regardless of community or category.

(C) Syllabi of Different Trades: For syllabi of various technical trades, please visit the Directorate General of Training (G01) website at https://dgt.gov.in.

(D) Applicants who have completed an ITI or trade apprenticeship must show up for the segment containing questions related to their trade.

(E) Level, Candidates for the diploma program are required to choose one trade from the list of trades below that corresponds to their engineering field.

Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT):

As long as they meet the requirements in Part-B of CBT-2, candidates equal to 8 (eight) times the number of ALP vacancies for each notified community / category—UR, OBC(NCL), SC, ST, and EWS (including ExSM)—will be shortlisted for CBAT based on their performance in Part-A of CBT-2 and the application of reservation rules.

(b) During the CBAT, these shortlisted applicants must provide their Vision Certificate in the original, in the format required by Annexure-VI; if they do not, they will not be allowed to participate.

(c) In order to be eligible, each test battery and CBAT part must be passed independently.

(d) There won’t be any negative grading and the CBAT will only be offered in Hindi and English.

(e) Candidates are urged to visit the following RDSO internet URLs for information on CBAT:

(f) Qualifying Marks: To be eligible to take the CBAT, all applicants, regardless of community, must receive a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery individually.

(g) Only applicants who meet the requirements of the CBAT will be included in the merit list. Marks earned in Part A of the CBT-2 will be given 70% weight, while CBAT scores will be given 30% weight.

Verification of Documents (DV):

(a) Candidates equal to the number of openings will be shortlisted for document verification based on their performance in Part-A of the CBT-2, their merit and marks in Part-B of the CBT-2, and their scores in the CBAT.

(b) If two or more candidates receive the same number of marks, their relative merit will be decided by age; that is, the elder candidate will be granted more credit than the younger candidate.

(c) The Railway Administration’s required Medical Fitness Test, as well as a final check of all pertinent documentation and an assessment of the candidates’ backgrounds and moral character, must be passed before the chosen candidates may be appointed.

(b) Interested parties are kindly advised that Railway Zones will only receive recommendations from RRBs for the names of empanelled applicants. The relevant Railway Zones alone are able to make the appointment offers.

(e) RRBs reserve the right to use applicants lower on the merit list if necessary, based on their merit and preferences, in the event of a shortage of emplacement or other exigencies. However, this will not give such applicants any special consideration for an appointment.
